Here’s a small fern you can use in a number of ways for greenery, texture and evergreen beauty throughout the year.
The Lemon Button Fern grows 1 foot high by 1 foot wide. It can be grown as a house plant, preferring bright indirect to low light.
If you want to grow outdoors, go for part shade. Because this fern is native to tropical regions of the world, it is frost tender.
As with many ferns, Nephrolepis cordifolia ‘Duffy,’ enjoys being kept evenly moist.
Some additional usages for this lovely, small scale fern include:
- Terrariums
- Mixed Container Arrangements
- A Lovely House Plant
How does it grow? It sends out creeping runners which sprout new plantlets.
Happy Gardening!

The Lemon Button Fern does well in a wide range of conditions but best of all is that it is compact in size and is one of the few ferns that fairs well with neglect and does extremely well in wet habitats. It stays under 12″ tall and sends creeping runners which sprout new plantlets. When it is actively growing it has a very subtle, but clear lemon scent. It is an excellent house plant.
