There’s always something to do in the garden, whether it’s pruning, tidying, planting or sowing. In Northern California’s zone 10, where I live, fall is the perfect time to divide overgrown perennials and grasses. I’ve been spending part of my fall gardening time dividing and transplanting plants like Hakonechloa and Acorus grass. It’s also a great time to plant spring bulbs as well as native plants, trees and shrubs which can get their roots established and take advantage of the (hopefully coming) winter rains. Another October or November to do is to topdress plants with organic matter and add mulch as needed.
Climate Zone = Fall Gardening To Do’s
WHAT TO DO’S WILL YOU DO?
A lot of that depends upon which Climate Zone you live in. But fret not… Here’s a very helpful October To Do List by Zone at Organic Magazine. It’s general, but has important basics for edibles, ornamental plants, and trees & shrubs. Here’s a USDA Zone Map, a great cheat sheet when you can’t remember which zone you live in. 🙂
Happy Gardening,
