The end of May/ early June is Sunset Magazine’s annual Celebration Weekend. It takes place at their headquarters in Menlo Park, California. This year, Sunset Magazine’s Celebration Weekend was a blast! Though we were only there for one day, the event is two days of cooking & barbecuing demos, regional California wine tasting (some small regions you don’t necessarily think of for wine, like San Luis Obispo), plenty of amazing vendors, travel info, music and fun stuff for kids.
On the garden front, Sunset Magazine is a leader in West Coast gardening info, trends and style. The magazine not only covers California but touches on many of the western states. The theme at this years show was small space gardening with a big impact. From a 12′ by 12′ densely packed berry garden patch, a small outdoor dining room, a bouquet flower garden, to a chance to tour a tiny house and garden. Where space is considered gold, as in many urban areas, carefully crafted and designed gardens must pack as much punch into every square inch as possible.

p.s. – This is a really great book. If you don’t own a copy yet, pick up the latest version of the New Sunset Western Garden Book
on Amazon. Here’s a portion of a recent review (BTW – 147 Amazon reviewers gave it 4 1/2 stars):
“I was hesitant to purchase the new edition since my old one still has its binding on it. I am very happy I did. It says there are over 500 new plants. I really like the new section in the back of the book “Gardening, Start to Finish” it includes Plan, Dig, Plant, Containers, and a large section called Grow, it is broken down into sections like; trees, veggies, herbs, vines, natives, succulents, etc.”
